The Family: A Proclamation to the World is one of the one of the most significant documents of the church, and the world, today. Its vitality comes from the fact that it was created and sustained by the twelve apostles and the prophet, which it lists in the very first sentence, signifying its importance. Another way this was shown was their use of the word 'solemnly' before 'proclaim' which heightened the seriousness of the article. To ordain means to order or decree something officially, which adds to the firm
nature of the proclamation, especially when it's used in the phrase "marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God." Heavenly Father added "between a man and a woman" from his previous prophetic declarations because he knew that eventually that part of marriage would be under attack, and correctly so. When marriage is under attack, the family is under attack, and as this is central to God's plan, the plan of salvation is jeopardized. Heavenly father's goal for us is to one day become like him, and this is done through our experiences on earth. God sends us to earth through loving parents, which take strong marriages, and that is why this issue is so significant.
